50mm Lens Meetup

Saturday 17 June
Downtown Fort Collins - 10am - 2 Hours
Thomas Tallant
The 50mm lens is one of the flexible and useful lenses in any photographer’s gear bag. It is neither a wide-angle or telephoto lens, but allows the camera to see on the same scale as your eye. As such, it can be used for a variety of styles, from landscape and street photography to portrait and product photography. In this meetup, we’ll review the basic camera settings. We’ll then cover some of the advantages of shooting with a prime lens, and some basic techniques to using the 50mm lens. As always, there will be ample opportunities for you to put your new knowledge into practice.

It was a fun evening exploring some creative ways to use light. I had always wanted to experiment with light painting and Tom gave us that opportunity. I wish it had been a bit warmer, but that is no criticism of the organizers or the instructor. I am looking forward to the next session that strikes my interest.

Tom provided great insights and tips to get the most out of the scenes we were capturing. He was encouraging and took his time to review what we had captured, but also shot with his own camera and showed us what he was seeing through the lens, very helpful.

Since this was my first session, I was unsure what to expect. I always aim to gain at least one skill set when attending a class such as this. My take home message was using and positioning a light source. In this case the sun. I have already ordered a collapsible diffuser screen.

I absolutely loved this class. Not only did I learn a TON about food photography, Tom was able to explain things about my camera- functions, settings, etc.-that I had not previously known about. As somewhat of a novice, this class really opened up my eyes to what I can do with food photography. I highly recommend this class to anyone wanting to learn about shadows, lighting and tricks to making images stand out.
